Last updated - March 31, 2023
How to Install a Showerhead Filter

Installing a showerhead filter can seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite simple. With the right tools and following instructions carefully, anyone can do it.

Here’s a guide on exactly how to install a showerhead filter to help you get started.

Tools Needed

  • Pliers
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Adjustable spanner or socket wrench set
  • Teflon tape (use the correct size for your fittings)
  • Specialized filter fitting tools (if necessary)

Before you start, make sure you have the right tools for the job. Different types of filters require different sizes and styles of fittings. So, be sure to select the ones that are suitable for your filter model.

How to Install A Showerhead Filter: Step-by-Step Installation Guide

1. Flush the filter before installation to ensure the filter is clear of dust, debris and leftover manufacturing residue.

2. Wrap the threads of the shower arm with Teflon tape.

3. Screw the new filter fitting onto the shower arm, using an adjustable wrench or specialized filter fitting tool to tighten it securely.

4. Check the filter’s orientation before attaching the filtered shower head. Follow the instructions that come with your filter.

5. Attach the filtered shower head to the other end of the filter fitting, using the appropriate specialized filter fitting tool if necessary.

6. Tighten the shower head onto the filter fitting with an adjustable wrench, being careful not to over-tighten and damage the fittings.

7. Do a quick flush test by turning on the water and checking for any leaks or abnormal flow.

8. If the flow rate is too high, install a flow restrictor on your showerhead or adjust your water supply valve to avoid damaging the filter.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed your shower head filter.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Leaking: Ensure all connections are secured tightly, and any gaskets or O-rings in place are free from wear or damage. If the issue persists, replace the entire unit.

Clogging: Remove and replace the cartridge according to manufacturer instructions. Use only filtered water when filling up the tank for optimal performance. Consider changing to a shower filter specifically for hard water if limescale is to blame.

Scale buildup: Use a natural or chemical descaler to clean the showerhead.

Noise: Use a vacuum pump to suck out any excess air pockets before running cold water through the system for about five minutes until all sounds cease.

Installing a shower head filter on easy mode

Installing a shower head filter is an easy and inexpensive way to improve your home’s water quality. With just a few basic tools and a little elbow grease, you can have cleaner, more enjoyable showers.

And if you’re still unsure about doing it yourself, consider calling in a professional plumber or a home improvement-savvy friend.
